Be Patient When Managing Fire Ants
CULLMAN, Ala. (WIAT) – Along with mosquitoes, watch out for aggressive fire ants. They are expected to be a lot worse this year.
More than forty people turned out for the Alabama Cooperative Extension Fire Ant Management seminar today. Many of those who attended work at area parks or ballfields, as well as, farms and large commercial properties.
Experts suggest using a bait type product instead of a pesticide spray which can kill other useful bugs. It typically takes a month to six weeks for bait to make a difference in numbers … but experts say give it time. Those fire ant mounds you see in your yard can be up to five feet deep.
They warn homeowners that you cannot eliminate fire ants … just better control where their mounds are located. Without any type of pest control, queens can live for seven years.
