Termite Inspection:  Don’t Put It Off

The small investment you make today can protect your largest investment – if you are like most people – for years to come.  Your home can suffer irreparable damage from termites, and they are not always easy to detect.  Consumer experts recommend an inspection for these burrowing bugs about once a year.

Inspection rates are not cheap, running about $75 to $150, but many extermination companies waive that fee if your house needs treatment.  An area of ten square feet will run $250. This is known as a spot treatment, and used when the bugs have been located in large numbers.  If the infestation is more widely spread, a soil treatment is recommended.  This method is considered the most effective, and prices range up to $1500.

Fumigation is considered the least desirable route, as it is expensive and brings environmental concerns along with it.  Plus, the termites can still return.

Signs to look for in your yard: mud tubes, sagging ceilings or floors, termite droppings which resemble coffee grounds, and old termite wings.  Don’t delay if you see any of these signs, or if your neighborhood or complex has had issues with termites in the past.  Seek out a licensed and reputable pest control company to check out your most valuable asset: your home.
