Animal Rescue Business Overrun by Rats

The Critter Café has had its doors shuttered since May, when a visitor seeking to adopt a pet reported the business to authorities.  The building appeared in poor condition, and the source of the damage is now known:  rats.

Between 600 and 800 of the rodents were found recently as inspectors took a closer look at the property, located in Fruitport Township, MI.  Because the rats are domestic they are not able to survive outside in either wilderness or urban environments.

The hundreds of rodents came from a box of rats dropped off at the shelter some time ago that was not immediately discovered.  The rats multiplied and, due to negligence by the business owners, continued to reproduce.

Most of the rats have been shuttled off to other parts of the states to find homes in other animal adoption centers, but due to the sheer numbers some may have to be euthanized.

Officials are still trying to round up all the rats in the building and surrounding area, but aren’t concerned about the rats spreading simply because they cannot survive.  Domestic rats do not have the skills to live outdoors and need to be cared for as pets.
