Bed Bug Infestation? What To Do And What Not To Do

Ever woken up with itchy red welts on your skin? And have you recently noticed some odd blood spots speckling your sheets where you know they shouldn’t be? According to Jody Gangloff-Kaufman, an entomologist with Cornell University, these are just some of the telltale signs that you are under a bed bug infestation.

“The little vampires consume what’s known as a blood meal,” Gangloff-Kaufman said. “They anesthetize you when they bite, so you don’t even feel it, ’til you wake up.”

According to Gangloff-Kaufman, the first time you notice the bites, you should do a follow up check on your sheets. “A next sign that we prescribe people to look for are bloodstains. Bloodstains like magic marker spots on the sheets are a good indication of bedbugs feeding.”

Surveys of the nation’s most bedbug-infested cities have ranked Columbus in seventh place, below Cincinnati and ahead of Dayton and Cleveland.

Perhaps not too surprising, is ultimate cultural melting pot New York City gaining the top (and worst bedbug-infested) spot. In fact, the city’s health department reported that 6.7% of New Yorkers have experienced bed bug infestations in the last year — a percentage that is equivalent to roughly more than half a million people.

If you find yourself on the receiving end of a bed bug infestation, call a professional pest control company immediately.

“In the worst cases of bedbugs that have gone unchecked, there are probably hundreds of thousands in a home,” said Gangloff-Kaufman.

One self-directed way for you to avoid infestation is to refrain from scavenging things, such as old, second-hand furniture, clothing, bags, shoes and the like, from the street. If you ever buy things second-hand, have them inspected by pest control experts before bringing them into your home — or you may end up unwittingly bringing an infestation right into your doors.

What never to do, is to engage in a do-it-yourself bed bug extermination measure. Bed bugs are difficult to spot. If you think you’ve destroyed what you can see, there’s surely more of those you haven’t found yet. These creatures are terribly elusive and must be handled with thorough measures applied by professional pest control personnel.
