Warfare Against Mosquitos

With the rise in mosquitos carrying serious illnesses such as yellow fever and West Nile virus this year it’s important to know how to combat these little blood suckers. Dr. Clifford Bassett, medical director of Allergy and Asthma Care of New York says that these pests can zone in on you from 150 feet away. What attracts them to you? Well, according to Bassett there are 400 compounds in our skin that draw mosquitos to us. One of the main ones is the carbon dioxide found in our skin, breath, temperature, as well as certain perfumes and scents.

So how do we fight against these awful pests? Bassett suggests dowsing yourself in insect repellant often. He also claims that more natural plant-like chemicals such as oil of lemon, eucalyptus, and Picaridin will be just as effective as DEET. You should also wear light colored clothing and long sleeves and pants to protect yourself when outdoors. Another way to repel these critters is to plug in a fan outside. By having a fan blowing on your already hot skin, the mosquitos will have a much harder time landing on you.

Are you fighting the good fight against mosquitos this year? What sort of tactics do you use?
