Fire Ant Frenzy

Fire Ant Frenzy

The weather has been treating us to some cool showers lately, and I for one love getting a little more rain, but it comes with a price. You may have begun to see big mounds of dirt popping here and there along the roads, sidewalks, and yards. If you step in one, you’ll get a rather nasty surprise. Fire ants will emerge from their nests prepared for battle, and you’re the invading army.

The increase in rain has also brought about an increase in fire ants. Previously, hot weather and drought forced these aggressive insects to burrow into the ground where conditions were cooler, but the now friendlier outside atmosphere is luring them out of their underground lairs and into our lives. And these guys come in packs of up to 200,000 fire ants per mound.

The best way to treat this problem is with a combination of preventative measures and pest control. Officials advise that you use granular baits two to three times a year to prevent these mounds from popping up. If you’ve already got fire ants invading your yard, you can use a dry or liquid mound treatment.

Are fire ants invading your territory? How are you dealing with these painful pests?
