Honeybee Haven

Britain’s homeowners are banding together in an effort to save their dwindling bee population. Researchers continue to find evidence that Britain’s bee population is plummeting. Since the 1950s the number of honeybee colonies has decreased from 250,000 to fewer than 100,000 today. The bees play a crucial role in pollinating many food crops.

The British government has put together a National Pollinator Strategy program to try and set up initiatives to revive the bee population and encourage pollination. The strategy advises people to take five simple steps to help out their bee friends, called the “Bees Needs”. People are being encouraged to grow more flowers and other plants for bees to pollinate, as well as cut their grass less.

Researchers have found that apples that were once exclusively pollinated by honeybees are now surviving on the efforts of wild bees. And it is not just the environment and our food that depends on bees. They play an important role in our economy as well. Bees were found to contribute 650 million pounds a year to the UK economy. Humans clearly need bees to survive.

Do you help out your local honeybee population?
