Misery and Mosquitos

We had one of the worst mosquito invasions in years this summer and fall, and it looks like things are only going to get worse from here on out. Mosquito populations are rising as climate change brings us longer, hotter, and wetter Summers and Autumns. This is going to become a serious issue as mosquitos are the leading carriers of possibly fatal diseases such as dengue fever, malaria, and Chagas disease. With the warmer climate, mosquitos are staying active longer than they used to during the Autumn season. Added to that the increased rain means there are more puddles and trapped water for mosquitos to lay their eggs in, meaning massive growth in their numbers.

One thing you can do easily to lessen you attractiveness to mosquitos is wear lighter colors. Mosquitos prefer darker clothing because it traps the heat and is easier to bite through than loose, flowing materials. Strangely enough drinking beer and eating limburger cheese also attracts more mosquitos to you. The biggest thing you can do to avoid mosquito bites is wear repellent, the best of which can protect you for up to 12 hours. You can also keep mosquitos out of your home by installing well-fitting screens on all your windows and doors.

Have mosquitos been a major pain in your neck this year?
