Hyped Up on Caffeine

Most people today survive their mornings thanks to that beloved beverage coffee. We aren’t the only ones who love the bitter brew, though. The coffee berry borer consumes more coffee in their lifetime than even the most devoted coffee connoisseur. They daily consume what would be toxic doses of caffeine for any other insect. These guys are the hipsters that actually buy their own gourmet coffee machine so they can enjoy a fresh pot every hour. These pests are also the leading destroyers of the coffee crop. They have been known to destroy 80 percent of a crops yield.

Scientists have recently discovered how these tiny insects are able to stomach so much caffeine. Fernando E. Vega and his colleagues Javier Ceja-Navarro and Eoin Brody performed a study on the gut of the coffee berry borer, which revealed that it is the special bacteria in their stomach that allows them to survive on this lethal diet. This discovery could lead to the creation of more effective methods of controlling these pests, which should please coffee lovers around the world.
