How To Keep Rodents Out of Your Home This Fall & Winter
Woodstock, GA (October 16, 2023) – As temperatures cool during the fall and winter months, rodents begin to search for a place to hide out for the season and, unfortunately, homes are the top choice for most of these pests. This year, Bug Busters USA is joining the National Pest Management Association in bringing awareness to the threats rodents pose to health and property during Rodent Awareness Week, an annual observance recognized by Chase’s Calendar of Events, taking place October 15 – 21, 2023. According to NPMA, an estimated 21 million U.S. homes are invaded by rodents so Bug Busters is sharing key prevention tips every homeowner should know.
“Beyond being a nuisance and threat to your property, mice and rats are capable of spreading more than 35 diseases, including Salmonella and hantavirus, making proper prevention vital to protecting the health of you and your family,” said Court Parker, CEO of Bug Busters. “Rodents often enter homes through small openings as they are able to manipulate their bodies to get inside. In fact, rats can fit through openings the size of a quarter and mice can fit through openings as small as a dime.”
To help families prevent rodent infestations this season, Bug Busters is sharing these key prevention tips:
- Install door sweeps on exterior doors and repair damaged screens.
- Screen vents and openings to chimneys.
- Seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home, including areas where utilities and pipes enter the home, using caulk, steel wool or a combination of both.
- Store food in airtight containers and dispose of garbage regularly.
- Replace loose mortar and weather stripping around the basement foundation and windows.
- Inspect items such as boxes, grocery bags and other packages brought into the home.
- Store firewood at least 20 feet away from the house and keep shrubbery trimmed and cut back from the house.
